Abstract

This study defines territory as a complex social system in which are display forms, communications and probabilities. The main goal of this research is to observe the availability of functional-systemic ways of integration (services, connectivity, etc.) in some neighborhood, but at the same time check the effectiveness access to such forms. From there, social processes of inclusion/exclusion could be observed in a Cartesian map of four quadrants that configure four territorial typologies. This quadrants and typologies allows as observe the chances of generate processes of effective social inclusion in the territories. For been able to apply this analytic framework we created two main variables: i) Availability of Alternatives and ii) a Risk Index, both of which were created based on two instruments: a systematic social observation adapted (and updated) to Chile (SSO) and a neighborhood-equipment checklist. This article presents the results of a research project applied to four highly-complex municipal territories[‘comunas’, in Spanish] located in Santiago: La Pintana, Cerro Navia, LoEspejo and Puente Alto.
