Abstract

This research sought to relate the risk of benzodiazepine dependence with perceived family functioning in patients of the Dr. David Benavente family health center in the rural commune of Ninhue, Chile. The participants of the study were subjects from rural areas in clinical treatment for benzodiazepine dependence, for periods equal to or longer than one year, comprising a sample of 24 cases, 20 women and 4 men. The methodology was quantitative, non-experimental, correlational and of cross-sectional temporal scope. The instruments used were the Family Functioning Scale (FACES 20 ESP) and the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST). The descriptive results allow us to distinguish a greater tendency towards detached and agglutinated cohesion, a rigid and chaotic adaptability, and, finally, an extreme type of family functioning related to the risk of moderate and intense dependence. The main conclusions of this research are based on the clinical condition, the educational level attained, the rurality condition and the age of the participants.
