Abstract
Abstract: The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic on March 11, 2020, resulting in the suspension of academic activities in several countries. In Ecuador, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) ensured students' right to education through distance learning, requiring adaptation and use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). This raised questions about how teachers and students would conduct their activities online. The present work examines the use of ICT in teaching and learning at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the Central University of Ecuador in 2020. The study aimed to analyze the digital competencies of teachers and students, evaluate the degree of adoption of technological tools in virtual environments, and study the disposition towards their pedagogical integration. With a descriptive research design directed at teachers and students, it was found that ICT were indispensable in completely online education, becoming the primary means of interaction. Two key groups were identified: teachers with easy access to technologies and students with difficulties, exacerbating the digital divide. This disparity, related to the economicimpacts of COVID-19, affected performance in higher education, evidencing the complexity of the transition to virtual learning and the underlying inequities in access to technology.
