Social Representations of Homelessness
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines social representations of homeless individuals through a survey conducted with a sample of 365 members of the general public. By employing a free association technique around an inducing concept, specific word dictionaries were created for three sub-samples: homeless individuals, street network workers, and the general public. Multivariate analysis facilitated the graphical depiction of the dimensions underlying these representations, unveiling a dichotomy in homelessness perception: it is associated with both positive connotations of freedom and love, and negative ones of poverty, abandonment, and consumption. This research contributes a nuanced understanding of attitudes towards homelessness, indicating the complexity of social representations and their influence on the social inclusion or exclusion of this group.
